Loving it!Binned the kit yeast, added two sachets Mangrove Jacks M84 Bohemian Lager yeast. Adjunct 300g dex, 1kg Brewblend 20. Primary for three weeks, in the middle of winter, temp less than 14oC throughout. Recommendation is to secondary for at least seven weeks. At four-five weeks, I tried one, decent, but a little rough around the edges. At six weeks plus, gave another one a go, and it has come into its own. Colour is nudging EBC 10, which is slightly on the ale side for a lager. The mouthfeel is so gentle and palate-cleansing, like a sorbet after a good dinner. Taste is a nice balance between fruit and hops. The only change I'll make next year is to add some Saaz to finish. |

Black Rock Export PilsenerMy first batch of Home Brew was made with the Black Rock Export Pilsener kit.I used 1KG of Muntons HMG Brewer's syrup (substituted puond-for-pound with powdered dextrose). I moved the batch to my bottling bucket after 3 weeks and batch primed with 250g of powdered dextrose, then bottled. After 12 days in bottles, i decided to test the beer to see how it was coming along. it tasted fruitier than I was expecting, but had a relatively strong carbonation. Little to no head retention and a rather bland mouthfeel. Very malty aroma, I would dry-hop this kit if I ever chose to do it again, however I feel that with a few additives like some light malt extract and some Munton's heading powder (or something like it), this Kit would be spectacular. Overall it is a decent kit. |

Too FruityI made this with the standard directions by using only dextrose except brewed with an extra 500g (total 1.5kg) becuase I had it left over from another brew. The result? Well far too much of a fruity/fruit juice type taste to it. Not sure how to explain it beyond that. It was overpowering to begin with and hasn't dissapeared as much as I was hoping. Next to no bitterness either, and a mouthfeel I would compare to water, which is to the style I assume. Quite dissapointed with it and if i was going to brew it again (not anytime soon) I would do a complete overhaul with added hops/yeast/ sugars etc. |
