Even drinking this green is pretty good! Lol. 10 days in bottles and it is starting to taste pretty good. So, I decided to try my first Black Rock kit and I liked the sound of Whispering Wheat. Fruity overtones etc. etc. sounded like a nice beer to kick off the summer. Well, despite the fact that it came with an underwhelming amount of yeast (who puts 5 grams for a 1.7 kg kit?, even Coopers puts 7grams.) I am pretty impressed with this brew. I added some extra Cooper's ale yeast I had to this to bring it up to about 10 grams of yeast and the result is a fairly smooth, very fizzy and quenching brew, but not overpowering either. Better than some other weak kits I have brewed in the "summer" category. I started with some Mr. Beer kits and was not overly impressed with them. The American Light Ale it comes with is a joke. Weak and metallic and just not really great. The second I brewed was the Aztec Mexican Cerveza from Mr. Beer and it was decent (as good as Corona) but still fairly weak. Then I found out that most of these lighter beers in cans are not that great sometimes. So I have since graduated to bigger brewing amounts, but I still employ the Mr. Beer Fermenter cause I like it and I still am liking the can kits (haven't graduated to brewing from scratch, yet) The next was a Cooper's IPA, which is a great brew and then I decided to try something non Cooper's and went with Black Rock Whispering Wheat and started using spray malt sugar instead of white (cane) table sugar. I used the "proper" malt for this, a medium wheat spray malt and I am rather impressed with the results. It has bite, but not too much and even though it is still a bit green, it is starting to get really smooth and has a "fairly" pleasant taste. Certainly not offensive in any way. One might even say it's bland, as some have said, but I think differently. It's not bland, but it does lack something. The only extra thing I added, was about a quarter to a third cup of real 100% Canadian, grade A Maple Syrup. I am kind of liking this beer actually as far as smoothness, light flavour and heavy head and carbonation. Very thirst quenching. It has enough kick for a lighter and more "summery" type beer, but maintains that nice light flavour. Is it bland on the wheat flavour? Yes, but it is still rather pleasent. Is it a bad beer? No. I've brewed MUCH worse beers, like that Mr Beer American Light Ale. Lol. |

Good Summer BrewLooks like a wheat beer, tastes like a wheat beer and an ideal brew to put down over those hot summer days when the temp gets too high for other yeasts. I've made it a few times and added different things and it has always turned out well. I like to add some wheat spray malt and have always used Mangrove Jacks Bavarian Wheat yeast. |

BR WW Hoegarden replicaUsed SafWheat yeast, 1kg Wheat Dried Spray Malt, 15gms corriander crushed, 2Tblspns orange peel zest, brewed at 18degC, bottled with drops. Tasted very yeasty for the first 2 months and is very fizzy. After 4 months in the bottle it is exceptional, not really a Hoegarden though, a good Bavarian Wheat beer though. Needs more corriander and oragnge peel too. |

Black Rock Whispering Wheat Hoegaarden cloneWell its no perfect Hoegaarden, but who expects that in an extract or even all grain brew seriously? But, its good, I'm blown away that an extract can produce a beer better than redback and HEF wheat beers and some of my brews have been very hoegaarden in taste. Colour is completely wrong but who cares? I recommend this kit. When your wife will shoot you for going all grain, try this. |

Weissbier AttemptHad the desire to make some german style weiss beer as a pint in the pub is about £3.70. On advice from my homebrew shop guy, I bought the whispering wheat and Wyeast laboratories Weihenstephan yeast propagator. Really exceptional. On my next batch. Would highly recomend spending the outlay on some decent yeast for this one. |

Hoegaarden clone - not even closeGoing for a Hoegaarden clone. Added 1kg LDME, 12g Halertau hops, 1 full grated orange rind and 12g coriander seeds. Boiled for 30 mins in 5L water, straight into fermenter/no straining/chunky style made up to 23L with filtered tap water for 2 weeks. 180g dextrose bulk optimus-prime for mad bubbles. Absolutely rude to taste after 2 weeks in the bottle, smelt like off yeast. 4 weeks, tasting/smelling better, but still no winner. 1st HB attempt, will try again, but not with this kit. Colour too dark for Hoegaarden, not even close. |

whispering wheatmade this kit as directed to be a hoegaarden clone. Added 1kg spray malt, 12g Halertau hops, orange rind and coriander seeds. OG; 1.058 FG; 1.010. Turned out beautiful after only 1 week. Not a perfect copy but pretty close. Nice and spicy and will definitely make again. |

Could be betterUsed this kit along with a brewiser wheat booster (it was free), 150g of chocolate malt and 100g of crystal malt to make a dunkelweiss. The kit yeast was typically naff, so I used a leftover Coopers Wheat sachet. Turned out ok, but still lacking. |

Wheat? Who knows - who cares?Attempted Hoegaarden style beer that has little in common with Hoegaarden. Made to 21 litres with 1kg Dry Wheat malt, 25g crushed coriander seeds, the zest of two oranges and safwheat yeast. Fermented at high teens for 2 weeks. Really good mouthfeel, full bodied, nice spicy aftertaste with a distinct orange colour and aroma...too much so initially, but has matured into a beautiful beer, not like Hoegaarden, not like anything in fact, but great drinking nonetheless. |

My 11th BrewThis was an attempted Hoegaarden clone using 15gm of crushed criander seeds and 2 tbs of orange rind. Added 1kg of Wheat malt brew-enhancer and used Safwheat yeast. Made to 21 litres. Doesn't have a clean, crisp citrusy flavour...it's difficult to describe...maybe medicine is the best decription. Hopefully with age it might get better. |

Black Rock Whispering WheatKegged this one, thought nice with a wheatbeer for summer. Nice head and good mouthfeel. But where is the wheat, can't even taste a hint of wheat. Didn't expect Hoegaarden but feel robbed to have to drink 23 liters of this amber coloured water. I would give this 5 for blandness. Nearly as bland and nondescript taste as a Carlton Cold. |
