Light but niceIngreds: 1 * Cascade Choc Mohog Porter Kit, 500g * Brewcraft Dark Malt Brew Improver, 250g * Light Dried Malt Extract, 500g * Brewcraft Brewing Honey, 1 * 15g Goldings Hops Teabag, 1 * Saf T-58 Yeast (was hoping to try liquid yeast but shop didn't have any). Primed with brown sugar (tried to do a little less to get a more creamy texture and reduce the fizz). Wanted to try dark spray malt but shop didn't have any. OG: 1.046 @ 25 degC, FG: 1.016 @ 20 degC. Alcohol about 4.1% before bottling. Lovely flavours, but not as smooth as the Dark Ale I made the same day. Next time I would put either more honey, or more malt, to bump up the alcohol. Still a beer to proud of (and far better than the lager I attempted 6 months ago). |

Full flavoured porter and Winter warmer the goodsI made this kit as per the recipe on the website (http://www.cascadehomebrew.com.au/brewk its/recipes.asp) suggested by the master craftsmen as follows: Full Flavoured Mahogany Porter Flavour kit * 1 can Chocolate Mahogany Porter * 1.5 kg light liquid malt extract * 0.3 kg maltodextrin (corn syrup) * 15 gram Saaz hop pellets OR Winter Porter Flavour kit · 2 cans Chocolate Mahogany Porter (use only one yeast sachet) · 2 kg light liquid malt extract · 20 gram Saaz hops Both were wonderful, particularly the winter warmer) and used the yeast given with the pack. Definantly give this a go using the above recipes. |

very goodThis was the best homebrew ive ever made!!! Just NEVER use their yeast... otherwise it will be s***. I used Thames Valley Wyeast with 1kg of morgans caramalt. Best homebrew ever!! With fuggles and goldings hops it was very sweet, bitter and delicious! especially with the liquid yeast. Drank it all really quick so i will have to make some more. |

Forget itSorry to lead you down a dark path, but I retract my previous comments! This kit has somehow changed (the yeast, at the very least) and my last brew was woeful with no chance of redemption. Has a roasty taste that is not chocolate and a finish that is just not right. Add five bucks and get a decent kit. This is officially my worse beer, though the Honey Porter I made was up with the best. Like I said, something's changed... |

Ripped offI can't believe these things cost more than Coopers. I gave it every opportunity to shine by adding all the good stuff: 1.5kg Dark Liq Malt, 50g black malt, 50g chocolate malt, 25g Newport @15min & 12g Nottingham yeast. These ingredients are wasted on this kit. The result is drinkable but I think that's down to using good ingredients. Definitely won't be buying any more Cascade kits. |

'Soul Beer' [as in 'Black as My' haha]I followed Wassa's suggestion that this one be done as a honey porter, and used 1kg of liquid chocolate malt extract and 500g of yellowbox honey, as well as 20g of Cascade hops steeped for 15 min prior to throwing in the fermenter. Used US-05 yeast @ 20'C. After a month this is great stuff, and it only improves with age. 4 stars here, give it a go |

Better kit than you may thinkI've made this kit twice, against all advice to the contrary. First brew was a Honey Ale with Morgans Caramalt extract, 12g Goldings, 400g Leatherwood honey and 100g Yellowbox. Hated it at first but after three months it was sensational - red, clear and tasty. I've just made it again without the honey - 1.5kg Coopers amber malt, 500g Stout booster, 150g Corn Syrup and 14g Goldings. After two weeks it looks great and tastes good, though it needs more time to blend. Its a great kit if you remember these things: One, the kit yeast needs a higher temp than some (23-25 degrees) to get going. Two, it's not a porter! Forgive that and it's a good beer, and three, it's easy on the hops - add your favourite. |

Beautiful marketing... hideous flavourMade as per instructions. Reeked of sulphor for some weeks after bottling, but eventually that passed. Now it passes for something similar to asprin flavoured beer. I can't bring myself to finish these off after 12 months. Never, ever again. Ooops I've got another can in the cupboard which I can't bring myself to toss out... Planning on using a better yeast and some other added flavour. |

Nothing to write home about.I did this kit,1kg LDME,300g Crystal, 150g Pale Choc 40g of fuggles, filled to 23 litres, and fermented with Safale S-04 @ 21 degrees.Result:A low alcohol, light on flavour brownish beer with ruby highlights. The flavour is quite light,a VERY mild roastiness is present from the Kit,combined with a very mild choc/coffe flavour aroma.the kit itself lacks depth and character, and if this kit was to be good,it needs greater quantities of Chocolate Malt,Crystal Malt(maybe a combo of light and dark), and small amount of Black Malt for a touch of roastiness and colour. It would also need more more Malt extract to beef up the OG, and be only filled to 20-21 litres, as it think 23 litres dilutes it too much Cut a long story short on its own it aint nothing special but with right extras could be. |

dodgy as a honey porterI made this one up as a honey porter recipe too... 1kg Dark Dry malt, 500g yellowbox honey, 20g cascade hops. I'm blaming the recipe here rather than the kit, as all I can taste is a below ordinary beer that doesn't taste anywhere near as good as it looks. Maaaaaybe I'll try this kit again, but definitely not as a honey porter. |

Re: First BrewMy first review was premature. Only two weeks after bottling, the honey porter is a vast improvement! Well balanced, and very enjoyable (so much so that I'll have to ration it if I'm to see how it improves with age...) I'll definitely one I'll make again, though I'll extract a bit more from the Cascade hops next time - it's there, but quite subtle. The honey is also subtle, but I'm not sure I'm game to add 1kg - maybe Ironbark honey instead of Yellowbox? (Not leatherwood!) |

First brewFollowed the honey porter recipe found here: 1 CMP tin, 1kg (dry) dark malt extract, 600g Yellowbox honey, Cascade hops "tea bag", S-04 yeast. Brewed for 10 days at 24C, OG: 1.062, FG: 1.016. I was little concerned about the final reading, but it seems to be typical for porters. Tasted at bottling today; seemed a bit thin, but not bad; should improve with bottle conditioning. |

my 13th BrewI based my brew on Wassa's 5 star effort...as I'd heard some ordinary reports on this kit (which was a Xmas present) So I used the 500gm of yellowbox honey, 1kg of Morgans Chocolate Malt and 15 gm of Cascade hops pellets. The result is very, very nice. Perhaps, surprisingly, a little on the light side more like a dark lager almost...but still very drinkable!! |

Great Honey PorterUsed this kit several times and was impressed. Latest brew was made with 1kg of DME and 500gm of yellowbox honey and 20gm of Cascade hops. Fermented at 20 degrees for 10 days then transferred to secondary for 5 days, bulk primed and bottled. Tried after 2 months and was good. After 3 months great and at 5 months excellent. |

Made kit as per instructions using 1kg of coopers brew enhancer 2 as sugar. Upon first tasting thought it was a poor brown ale. After about 6 months in the bottle seemed to be a much lighter red colour and improved in flavour. Good but not worth the extra $. | |||

Chocolate Mahogany PorterUsed kit , 500g dextrose, 250g maltodextrin, 250g light dried malt, kit yeast and reduced volume to 17.5 litres. Resonable head, body and taste. Flavour requires development at the production level to make it interesting and different to other dark ales on the market. |

mahogany "porter"This is crap, far too sweet for me, not backed up with a good dose of hops and no real porter flavour. Made with a liquid malt and a liquid yeast - what a waste. Have struggled through 1/3 of the keg but won't be keeping it. Will dump it and put a good beer in it. I don't think I'll be taking a punt on cascade again if this beer is an indication of the brand. |

As good as you make itBrewed with 2kg of DME and a plug of Willamette hops at flameout. Fermented with White Labs Southern German Lager yeast. Lovely hops aroma. Medium bodied with warm alcohol and rich malt flavours. Some crispness and clean flavours from (wrong for style) lager yeast. Can taste and smell chocolate malt. Treat a kit right and it can taste great. |

Mahogany PorterUsed this as the base for my Chocolate Porter Added Amber Malt Extract and 500ml Morgans Chocolate Malt Extract. Temp 18-22 deg. Racked and added 7g Saaz finishing hops. Under primed most bottles with the idea of letting this one wait for winter. After 2 weeks, normal primed bottles are showing good head and nice choc aftertaste. Not much roasted flavour which is good. |

awfulThe only good thing about this kit is the pretty wench and fanciful bedtime story on the label. It's all down hill from there. I can't see how Cascade could possibly make repeat sales with this one. |

AllrightCascade got me on this one with its flashy label.. This is a drink that you can handle only in small dosses. It tastes ok with the first mouth full and then gets worst from then on.. I used 500g dex 500 multi and 250g dme. S04 SafAle yeast. It looks really nice in the glass. A nice thinck foamy head that doesn't easily disapate. |

Mahogany Chair LegTo Cascade Porter, added 500g light dry malt, 500g dextrose & 250g malto dexrin, 20L spring water. Fermented at 12C with 23g Saflager yeast for 6 days, racked for 2 days, then to keg. Conditioned for 4 days at 2 bar pressure. More a sipping type beer for colder months, but wont last that long. |

Not a bad dropHave made the porter twice now and have enjoyed it both timed, the first instalment was a simple kit + kit yeast and a 50/50 bag of dex & lme. The second and far better use of the kit was in the creation of a honey porter. I added 1kg of honey (organic)1kg of light malt and and kit + yeast --- it was a winner, high alcohol content 7+ and smooth well rounded mouth feel + a good head, one longneck was a huge winter warmer !! |

Passable PorterTHe kit has the sweetness and body of a porter if you use extra malt, but none of the roasty (or I daresay) chocolatey flavours that characterise a good porter. Passable but not great. |

Gutless effortCUB have obviously put more effort into winning our wallets than our hearts with this lame attempt at beer, which is a porter in name only. In order to make this as inoffensive to as many people as possible, they have offended home brewers who take risks with their brews in order to try and make a beer with flavour and character. There is no such attempt here. Pretty labels does not a beer make. Tasteless, bland, forgettable. Made with 1.5Kg Coopers LME, somewhat diluting the colour. |
