Too sharpEasy as to make, just can + water, i used the yeast that came with it. Brewed in summer around 24deg. After 6 months in bottle I'm disappointed with it. It's just really bitter on the palate and a bit too sharp for my liking. I like my wheat beers smooth and refreshing. It mellows as you get toward the bottom of the glass but still it's not like the wheats I like. Maybe a different yeast as the others have suggested. Bitterness seems to be a feature of the X-Tract range, don't know why. May suit different tastes, I've given it a 2 but neighbour gave it a 5. Bitter lovers would enjoy it. |

Maybe a different yeast?I made this with the standard yeast to try it. Whilst not as hugely bitter as the Pils it still has a huge bitterness. Absolutely no german wheat flavours. In fact not really like any wheat I've made before. After reading the other review of this kit I'm thinking it might have been worth trying with a better yeast, OTOH I think the kit should stand on its own feet. |

X-TRACT wheatMy first go at liquid yeast WLP300 hefeweizen. Made a starter etc. Can and water as directed, tossed the dried yeast aside and pitched the liquid. 11 days to finish fermenting at around 24C, primed and filled 32 bottles. After 1 week in bottle it has good carbonation for this style. Faint banana and clove character, reasonable head (should improve with age). I recon and my mates agree that this is my best. Taste is sensational and well balanced. Could drink it all in a sitting I recon, but it's too good! It demands to be savoured. Probably better than anything I've ever tasted, and I made it! |
